Marcus enjoyed spending time with Jewel’s sister. She was outgoing and fun—and a valuable ally in his battle to overcome Jewel’s reservations about getting involved with him.“Has she invited you to be her date for my dinner party yet?” Crystal asked, when she caught up with him at the stable Tuesday afternoon.
“Yes, although that’s not quite how the invitation was issued.”
“What do you mean?”
“She asked me to go,” he admitted. “Because if she showed up alone, there would be thirteen at the table and that would be bad luck.”
Crystal rolled her eyes. “If that’s the explanation she gave for inviting you, I’m surprised you didn’t turn her down.”
He shrugged. “I figure dinner at your place means you’re making dessert.”
“Black Forest Cake,” she promised.
“Mmm.” He hummed his approval before asking, “Who else is going to be at this dinner party?”
“Mostly business associates of Simon’s,” she told him. “Several of whom have some connection to the thoroughbred industry—as most people living in Alliston do. And Hugo DaCosta, one of Simon’s oldest and biggest clients, is bringing a friend—a prince, he claims.”
Mac stilled. “A prince?”
Crystal nodded. “Yeah. From some obscure little country in the Mediterranean.”
He nearly groaned. Knowing that Cameron was in West Virginia, there was no hope that Crystal’s royal dinner guest was anyone other than his cousin. Which meant that he had to find a way to back out of his date with Jewel, because there was no way Cameron wouldn’t blow his cover, and he wasn’t nearly ready for Jewel to learn the truth of his identity. Not until he knew that the feelings she was starting to have for him were real and wouldn’t be influenced by his title.
“Have you met this guy—this prince?” he asked casually.
“No, but Jewel did. He was at the race in Arlington with DaCosta last weekend.” She grinned at him. “Why? Are you worried that my sister will fall head over heels for him just because of his title?”
“I’m sure it happens.” He spread fresh bedding in the stall.
“I’m sure it does,” she said. “But not with Jewel. In fact, she specifically asked not to be seated next to him at the table.” She winked at him. “Which is when I told her that she would have to bring a date to ensure that didn’t happen.”
Marcus lifted another forkful of straw and wondered how he was now going to extricate himself from a situation he’d deliberately maneuvered himself into.
He’d told Jewel the next move would need to be hers, and she’d finally made it. Now he had to change those plans—and he had a feeling she wasn’t going to appreciate that at all.
